New year's projects

It is always a great time to talk about our projects, conquests and resolutions. I like the idea of the "New Year's" reference point, I think it helps to get your mind set on a fresh starting point. E sempre boa altura para falar dos nossos projectos, conquistas e resolucoes. Eu gosto da ideia de "Ano Novo" como ponto de referencia, como se fosse um "comecar de novo".
Probably the episode with my daughter last weekend (previous post) will be my true reference point, the important is that I keep my mind set on my goals. One of them is to update this blog more often, I am startled by how much it is helping me to connect with my friends and family. Both the writing down something from your life and the receiving feedback It is very conforting and energizing. Provavelmente o que aconteceu a minha filha no passado fim-de-semana (ver o "post" anterior) vai ser o meu verdadeiro ponto de referencia, mas o importante e que eu nao me esqueca dos meus objectivos. Um deles e actualizar este blog mais frequentemente, e incrivel a ligacao que este facilita entre mim, os meus amigos e a minha familia. O simples acto de escrever algo da minha vida e receber comentarios confere um grande conforto interior e da energia.

Another is to get my hands more efficient and daring in my crafts. In the box above are the pieces that will constitute the top of a queen size quilt (really!!!!!). My husband and I shopped together at the wonderful quilt shop in Trenton, Florida, almost one year ago!... yes, still a way to go... but I really want to have it done. Outro e de ser mais eficiente e destemida no meu artesanato. Na foto acima estao as pecas que irao constituir uma colcha de cama de casal (a serio!!!!) O meu marido foi comigo a uma loja incrivel de quilts em Trenton, perto de Gainesville, ha quase um ano e escolhemos juntos os tecidos!... sim, e verdade, ainda tenho bastante que coser.... mas eu quero ve-lo feito.
I also need to mail some last "Christmas" presents...tambem ainda preciso de enviar umas prendas...(de Natal????)...











Last week I join a Gym and have been working out. I tried out yoga classes and am enjoying. Na semana passada inscrevi-me num Ginasio e tenho ida as aulas de ginastica. Pela primeira vez experimentei Yoga, gostei bastante!
Painting some of the rooms in my house is another project that needs my attention this year. At least my son's room and the play area need some remodeling and after that will be the turn for the kitchen. Tambem quero pintar a minha casa este ano. Principalmente o quarto do meu filho e a area onde eles brincam. A seguir e a vez da cozinha.
Time to go to sleep. I have plans for my daughter and I for tomorrow morning. Sao horas de dormir. Amanha de manha eu e a minha filha temos muito que fazer juntas.

The Anaphylaxis trip

It was Sunday afternoon and my sweet little angel is softly asleep. She woke up briefly for a drink and some cereals and went right back to bed for a nice restful night. Next morning she had a great time at school with her friends and life went on beautiful and simple, as usual.
Era Domingo a tarde e a minha pequena princesa estava docemente a dormir. Acordou somente para beber agua, comeu uns cereais e voltou para a cama para uma boa noite de descanso. Na manha seguinte divertiu-se a valer na escola com os seus amigos. E a vida continuou, bela e simples, como e normal.

This is a wonderful happy end of a terrible "trip" that happened Saturday night. The kind of episodes that make you fully appreciate the wonders of Medicine and Science and the great work of Doctors and Nurses: you see something that can quickly kill, be overcome quickly.
Isto e um maravilhoso final feliz de uma "viagem" horrivel que aconteceu no Sabado a noite. O tipo de acontecimentos que nos faz apreciar profundamente as maravilhas da Medicina e Ciencia e o excelente trabalho de medicos e enfermeiros: quando vemos algo que rapidamente pode por termo a uma vida ser rapidamente ultrapassado.
My daughter has always refused to eat any shellfish. But last Saturday, perhaps because she was hungry after a great afternoon of riding her bicycle, jumping and running, she ate some shrimp that we had grilled for dinner. Still at the table she complained of "tummy ache", became rather irritable and quite unhappy. She started to scratch and complaining of itching. A rash appeared on her abdomen, her lips started to swell and her face turned red with some rash. By this time her breathing became a little difficult, just like when she had asthma. She was having a very strong allergic reaction to shrimp.
A minha filha sempre se recusou a comer marisco. Mas no sabado, talvez por estar com fome depois de uma tarde a andar de bicicleta, correr e saltar comeu o camarao que tinhamos grilhado para o jantar. Ainda estavamos a mesa quando ela se comecou a queixar de dores de barriga, o seu comportamento alterou-se, mostrando que nao se estava a sentir bem. Queixou-se de comichao cocando a barriga, os bracos e as pernas. Apareceram borbulhas no seu abdomen, os labios comecaram a inchar e a sua cara ficou muito vermelha. Depois a sua respiracao tornou-se pesada, tal como quando tem asma. A minha filha estava a sofrer uma reaccao alergica severa ao camarao.
At the Pediatric Hospital she was immediately called in. The oxigen level in her blood was low. The nurses were incredible: they knew how to care for a little child and they acted fast! The doctor on call followed the procedure closely. Within a few minutes of getting the shot of epinephrine, the benadryl and the steroids, my little girl calm down, her face turned to her normal colors, her breathing relaxed. They saved my child's life.
No Hospital Pediatrico chamaram-nos imediatamente. O nivel de oxigenio no sangue estava baixo. As enfermeiras foram incriveis: sabiam exactamente como lidar com uma crianca e agiram rapidamente. O medico de servico presenciou todo o procedimento explicando-nos (pais0 o que se estava a fazer. Instantes depis da injeccao de epinephrina, com accao conjunta de benadryl e esteroides, a minha filhita ficou mais calma, a sua face voltou as suas cores naturais e a sua respiracao normalizou-se. Aquela equipe salvou a vida da minha filha.
We now are prepared with an "EpiPen" to immediately treat my daughter if the situation of anaphylaxis (severe allergic reaction) is somehow triggered again.
Shrimp (any kind of shellfish, to be safe) is to stay absolutely away from her organism. Fortunately, this is a type of food that is not widely used at our tables.
She is doing great and I am so very grateful...

A partir de agora, nos estamos sempre preparados com uma "EpiPen" (como uma "seringa" de epinephrina) para actuar imediatamente no caso de outra reaccao anaphilactica for desencadeada no organismo da minha filha.
Camarao (e qualquer tipo de marisco, por uma questao de seguranca) estao abolidos do "prato" da minha pequena. Felizmente nao e um tipo de alimento frequente.
Ela esta optima e eu... eu estou feliz e agradecida.

First snow!

It happened! It snowed last night!
My son jumped out from bed and all he wanted was to go outside and play in the snow. I barely was able to make him wear some warm clothes and boots. My daughter mumbled she wanted to see the snow and kept on dreaming... until she heard all the commotion outside: her brother and mom, by her window!
Aconteceu! Nevou na noite passada!
O meu filho saltou da cama pronto para ir brincar la para fora na neve. Quase que nao conseguia faze-lo vestir roupa quente e calcar umas botas. A minha filha respondeu num sussurro que queria ir ver a neve mas continuou a sonhar... ate que ouviu o barulho que o irmao e a mae faziam ao pe da sua janela!

Does not matter it was still dark, the snow was there to be enjoyed!
O que interessa que ainda esteja escuro, a neve esta ali para ser apreciada!

The snow was not enough for a big snowman, but still good for throwing.
The kids were absolutelly thrilled, this was their first snow.
A neve nao era suficiente para construir um boneco de neve, mas dava para atirar.
Os miudos estavam encantados, esta foi a primeira vez que estiveram na neve.

To warm up, the fireplace looks beautiful, but the hot air vent feels great!...
Para aquecer, a lareira e muito bonita, mas as saidas do ar do aquecimento da casa sabem mesmo bem...

Back to florida to see our friends!

My father-in-law is recovering from the surgery and is doing well. Thank you so much for your thoughts and kind words.
O meu sogro esta a recuperar da operacao a que foi submetido e esta bem. Obrigado a todos pelas vossas palavras atenciosas.

As we felt much relieved, we decided to make a quick trip to Florida and visit our friends. It all worked out really well: the Secret Santa meeting of Minerva's Circle was set for Sunday and a very good friend who I did not want to miss would be away only the weekend after.
Bastante aliviados depois dessa tensao, decidimos fazer uma visita aos nossos amigos na Florida. Calhou bem: a reuniao de Minerva Circle do Pai Natal secreto estava marcada para este Domingo e uma das minhas amigas que eu queria mesmo ver estava de viagem so no fim-de-semana a seguir.

Quick phone calls and emails and my friends set it up for a really wonderful visit!
Alguns telefonemas e emails e as minhas amigas organizaram tudo para uma visita estupenda!

We were so relaxed enjoying each other and letting the children play that we even forgot to take pictures. Saturday it was raining, we could not go play in the park. My friends home quickly started looking like a playground, with children running, playing, laughing....
Nos estavamos tao relaxadas na conversa enquanto as criancas brincavam que ate nos esquecemos de tirar fotografias. No Sabado estava a chover e nos nao podemos ir ao parque. Em pouco tempo a casa da minha amiga estava cheia de criancas a correr, a brincar, a rir...

Sunday morning I went to meet my friends from Minerva's Circle, we had a lot of fun exchanging our Secret Santa's handmade presents.
No Domingo de manha fui reunir-me com as minhas amigas do grupo Minerva's Circle. Divertimo-nos a valer com a troca de presentes feitos por cada uma de nos.
It was a really wonderful visit, I hope we can make it again soon!
Foi uma visita maravilhosa, espero voltar outra vez brevemente!

From the heart

Yesterday, the 3rd January, my father-in-law was submitted to surgery due to a growing tumor in the base of the brain. The procedure was obviously delicate and we were very apprehensive. Finally, after almost five hours, we obtained notice that the surgery was over and he was recovering in the neurosurgery ICU (Intensive care Unit).
Our very best wishes, from the heart, for a smooth and total recovery.
Ontem, 3 de Janeiro, o meu sogro deu entrada no hospital para ser operado e resolver o problema de um tumor em crescimento na base do cerebro. A ansiedade na familia foi crescente a medida que a data se aproximava e depois a propria operacao decorria. Felizmente ao fim de cinco horas na sala de operacoes, noticias chegaram de que a operacao tinha decorrido quase sem complicacoes e que ele estava em recuperacao nos cuidados intensivos de neurocirurgia.
Os nossos sinceros votos, do fundo do coracao, para uma completa e rapida recuperacao.
