A very nice weekend

It was "Memorial Day" weekend: three full days of freedom (at least in my kids perspective!).
Foi o fim-de-semana de "Memorial day": tres dias completos de liberdade (pelo menos na perspectiva dos meus filhos!).

One cannot have too much of a good thing: thus, we went back to the strawberry farm and picked more delicious strawberries: we ate them "as is", in a smoothie, as popsicles and with whipped cream for dessert!
O que e bom nunca e demais: por isso voltamos a quinta dos morangos e apanhamos mais dessa deliciosa fruta: comemo-los simples, fizemos batidos, gelados e com chantilly para sobremesa!

In the afternoon we wnet to see the show "Hi-Yo, Silver!

Afterwards was time to play and celebrate friendship.

Depois do espectaculo foi tempo de brincadeira e fazer amizades.
Sunday morning I woke up early (against all odds!!!). So my son and I decided to use that time to go for a walk in the trail. We brought the binoculars and the camera.
No domingo acordei de madrugada (nao e normal!!!!). Resolvi aproveitar para ir com o meu filho dar um passeio pelo trilho. Trouxemos os binoculos e a maquina fotografica.

We saw a few footprints of deer (above picture).
Vimos pegadas de veado (foto acima).

A flock of Canada geese (Branta canadensis). We also spotted a gorgeous Indigo Bunting male (Passerina Cyanea).
Um bando de gansos (Branta canadensis). Tambem vimos um lindo passaro azul Passerina Cyanea.

We saw a dense "community" of these bugs, which I could not find in my "Insect pocket guide". If you can help the identification, let me know...
A beira do trilho vimos esta densa comunidade de insectos, os quais nao consegui encontrar no meu guia de campo dos insectos. Se puder ajudar na identificacao, diga-me...
My son likes the bugs. He remembers that we had a lot of these populating our flower pots outside of our home in Florida.
O meu filho gosta muito de insectos. Ele lembrou-se imediatamente de que estes insectos tambem eram abundantes nos nossos vasos de plantas que tinhamos a volta da nossa casa da Florida.

On Monday it was raining and we went to the museum "Sci works". My son experienced the mechanics of riding a bicycle.
Na Segunda-feira estava a chover e nos fomos ao museu da ciencia "Sci works". O meu filho experimentou a mecanica de guiar uma bicicleta.

They played some musical instruments...
Tocaram em alguns instrumentos musicais...

...but we spent most of the time at my daughters favorite room, the one health care: she loves dental matters: (maybe Francisco will have an apprentice, in a few years?!...)
...mas passamos a maior parte do tempo na sala favorita da minha filha, a relacionada com a saude, mais precisamente do cuidado dos dentes: (talvez daqui a uns anos ela venha a ser uma aprendiz com o Francisco?..).

When we left the museum they were as perspired as if we were leaving a gym (they really worked hard at the Sci-"works"). To cool down, they put the swim-suits on and went play in the rain!
Quando saimos do museu eles estavam tao transpirados como se tivessem ido ao ginasio (fartaram-se de trabalhar no sci-works). Para se refrescarem, vestiram os fatos-de-banho e foram brincar na chuva!

Rain is great fun!

What a "berry" nice day!

Did I mention that strawberries are in season?
Today we went strawberry picking with my daughters school at a very nice organic farm.
Ola!
Ja disse que estamos em plena estacao de morangos?
Pois, hoje fomos apanhar morangos a uma linda quinta (que nao usa pesticidas nem fertilizantes) com a escola da minha filhota.

She was very careful to pick only the red ones, without green or white spots.
Com todo o cuidado, a minha princesa foi escolhendo so os morangos madurinhos, muito encarnados sem partes brancas nem verdes.

Yummy..... they were so delicious!!!
Ahhh!.... que delicia!!!!

After taste-proofing (a few!) she filled up her bag to bring home.
I couldn't come home with only such a small bag...
Depois de provar alguns (bastantes!) encheu o saco para trazer para casa.
(nem pensar em vir para casa so com aquele saquinho... eu tratei de trazer uma boa caixa deles).

I brought quite enough for a nice "strawberry lunch" and for a nice "strawberry snack" when my son came back from school!
Trouxemos o suficiente para um delicioso "almoco de morangos" e "lanche de morangos" quando o meu filho chegou da escola!

And my son brought home from school the award of "Star Student" for a job well done!
Ah: o meu filho trouxe da escola o premio de "estudante brilhante" por ter feito um bom trabalho!

What's cookin'? Who?

Hi!
Sunday night my son read a book which included a recipe for "Strawberry shortcake"that looked delicious. He was inspired and since we are in the strawberry season we decided that he could do it after school, the very next day.
Ola!
No Domingo a noite o meu filho leu um livro que acabava com a receita de um "Bolo de morangos" que parecia delicioso. Ele ficou inspirado e como estamos na epoca dos morangos, combinamos que ele o podia fazer no dia seguinte quando chegasse da escola.
And so he did!
He started by picking up and gather all the ingredients on the counter. Then he measured, mixed and added the butter his sister had cut in small pieces (great job with the knife!).
We put it in the oven, in a greased pan and then he beat the heavy cream with powdered sugar to make whipped cream.
In the mean time we had a surprise visit from his friend that greatly added to the fun!
When all was ready, they layered the cake with the whipped cream and strawberries and right after....
E assim foi!
Comecou por ir buscar e juntar todos os ingredientes em cima da banca. A seguir mediu, misturou e juntou a manteiga muito bem cortadinha pela sua manita (boa manipulacao da faca de cozinha!). Pos-se a massa no forno numa forma untada. Depois bateu as natas com acucar em po, com a batedeira para fazer o chantilly.
Entretanto apareceu o amigo dele (com a mae e o irmao) que tornou o ambiente ainda mais divertido!
Quando tudo estava pronto, eles fizeram as camadas, bolo, chantilly e morangos.
E logo a seguir....

...we had a delicious treat!
... comemos uma sobremesa deliciosa!

Afterwards, while I cleaned the kitchen, my son cooked scrambled eggs with cheese for our dinner.
Mais tarde, enquanto eu limpava a cozinha, o meu filhote preparou ovos mexidos com queijo para o jantar.

The eggs were quite delicious, too!
Os ovos tambem estavam detras da orelha!

Wow! What a great cooking day!

My girl!

Bird-watching: I wasn't this young, but I have great memories of my work with the birds. Maybe she will get me back to what was one of my biggest passions as a student.
Observar as aves: eu nao era tao nova, mas adorei o meu trabalho com aves. Talvez com a minha filha eu volte a dedicar-me as aves, uma das minhas grandes paixoes do meu tempo de estudante.

Painting is one of her favorite activities. The (recycled) box of chocolate is perfect to mix the colors!

Recycled home decor!

Hi! This weekend was beautiful but still cold! I used my time to finish little projects that have been "hanging" for a while...

Ola! Tivemos uns dias lindos neste fim-de-semana mas ainda com muito frio. Eu resolvi concluir pequenso projectos que ja ha algum tempo estao a espera...

Once we finished the maple syrup my kids and I decided that the bottle was too cute to go into the recycle bin! So we cleaned it and removed all the labels. Today I filled it up with coffee beans and decorated with some "sticks" and tree branches (blooming) from our yard.
Quando acabamos o "maple syrup" os meus filhos e eu achamos que o frasco era demasiado giro para ir para a vidrao. Entao lavamo-lo e removemos as etiquetas. Hoje enchio com graos de cafe e decorei com ramos, alguns do chao outros das arvores que estao em flor no nosso quintal.

My daughter found some nice big "sticks" and we decorated the corner of the sitting room. I like it against the new wall colors!
A minha filha encontrou uns ramos grandes e nos decoramos o canto da sala. Gosto de os ver em contraste com as novas cores das paredes!
Then I decided to make some picture frames for which I had bought glass cut in 8x10 inch rectangles.
The first fabric frames I made were for my grandmother, as a present on her 94th birthday. Despite they had no glass, my grandmother asked me to hang them on a particular place of her bedroom wall, so she could easily look at the pictures of my children, framed in.

Here is a small tutorial of the frame, with pictures taken from two of the projects:
A seguir resolvi fazer umas molduras para as quais tinha comprado vidro cortado em rectangulos de 8x10 polegadas (20x25 cm).
As primeiras molduras de pano que fiz foram para oferecer a minha avo, no seu nonagesimo quarto aniversario. Apesar de nao terem vidro ela pediu-me para os pendurar em determinado local da parede do seu quarto de modo a poder olhar para as fotografias (dos meus filhos) facilmente.

Aqui vai um tutorial da moldura com fotos de dois projectos:
First, from unused cardboard boxes cut rectangles in the same size of the glass.
Cortar de caixas de cartao sem uso rectangulos do mesmo tamanho do vidro.

Select the fabric(s) you want to use and cut a rectangle larger then the glass (about 1 inch on each side).
Seleccione o(s) tecido(s) que deseja usar e corte de modo a obter um rectangulo maior que o vidro (mais ou menos 2,5 cm para cada lado).

Decorate the fabric frame as you like. On this one I decided to insert stripes of a contrasting fabric, so I cut and sewn the pieces together. In another project I just sewn one piece on the main fabric to have the fraying showing.
Decore o rectangulo de tecido a sua vontade. Neste projecto eu decidi inserir fitas com cor contrastante. Para isso cortei e cosi as pecas de modo a esconder as margens nas bainhas. Noutro projecto cosi um pano sobre o rectangulo de fundo de modo a mostrar as margens desfiadas.

Insert two "two-legged" pins in the cardboard 1 inch from the top and 2 inches from each side.
Faca dois orificios no cartao, 2,5 cm abaixo da margem superior e a 5 cm de cada um dos lados para inserir estes "pins".

Center the cardboard on the back of the fabric frame. Turn the excess fabric over the cardboard and use school glue to keep it in place.

Centre o cartao nas costas da moldura de pano. Vire as margens de pano em excesso por cima do cartao e cole com cola de artesanato da escola.

Run a string strong enough to hold the frame plus the glass under the head of the pins.
Passe um fio suficientemente forte para suportar a moldura e o vidro, por baixo da cabeca de cada um dos "pins".

Tie the string securely.

Ate com seguranca.

Turn upside: center the photo and cover with the glass.
Vire ao contrario: coloque a fotografia no centro e ponha o vidro por cima.

I used these paper clips to keep the frame and the glass together. I plan to look for clips more inconspicuous and substitute.
Eu usei estes "clips" de metal para unir a moldura e o vidro.
