Where did Summer go?

Hi!
I am back to the blogsphere and with great memories,stories and some crafts to share with you! Since the kid's school was out that I turned off the alarm clocks (yes, I need more then one alarm to get me up in the morning...) and have been playing (almost) like them. In the few weeks before our vacation in Portugal, we enjoyed the pool, the NC Zoo and a fun trip to Florida.

Estou de volta a blogosfera com excelentes recordacoes, historias e alguns trabalhos de artesanato para partilhar. Desde que comecaram as ferias que os despertadores se desligaram (sim, eu preciso de mais do que um despertador para me fazer levantar de manha...) e eu tenho andado a brincar e a passear com os meus filhos. Nas poucas semanas antes da nossa partida para Portugal, nos divertimo-nos na piscina, no Jardim Zoologico e claro, fizemos uma viagem ate a Florida para estar com os nossos amigos.

Then we went to my beautiful country where we had a great time enjoying the family and friends.
Ate que fomos na grande viagem ate ao meu bonito Portugal onde a familia estava a espera.

A walk by the creek and... a bag

It was a beautiful day. We went on our quest by the creek, my son taking pictures and my daughter dancing...
Estava um dia lindo. Nos fomos na nossa conquista junto ao ribeiro, o meu filho a tirar fotografias e a minha filha a dancar...

well...we tried... to get the insects on the flowers in the photo...
bom... nos tentamos... fotografar os insectos em cima das flores...
They have been mesmerized by crystals and rocks...
Os meus filhos andam curiosissimos sobre os cristais e as rochas...
still, jumping is a lot more fun!

This rock was denominated "the thinking chair".
Esta rocha foi designada "a cadeira de pensar".
Back home, I went to my crafts...
Em casa eu (escapei-me) para as minhas costuras....
I bought this magazine at Joanne's, two days ago: it was full of great ideas for small projects. I decided to make this small bag.
Comprei esta revista ha dois dias na loja dos tecidos: gostei das ideias que continha para pequenos projectos. Decidi fazer esta pequena carteira.
It is really easy to make, one of the handles is longer than the other.
E muito facil de fazer, uma das alcas e mais comprida que a outra.
To close the bag just slip the long one through the small one and you're set!
Para fechar passa-se a alca mais comprida por dentro da mais curta e pronto!
I quilted the (bright) outer side of the bag...
Eu acolchoei o lado de fora (de cores vivas) da mala...
but with the buttons on the three pockets, it also is cute turned inside out! I really like this side too!
Mas com os botoes a fechar os tres bolsitos tambem fica muito gira com este lado virado para fora!

A day at the countryside

First words from my son as he was waking up in the morning: "today's the big day!".
Was this excitement inspired by the poney rides at a friend's birthday party?
Ao acordar as primeiras palavras do meu filho: "e hoje o grande dia!"
Estaria ele inspirado pelos passeios a cavalo na festa de anos de uma amiga?


For some of us, yes. We had the oportunity to feed the horses with some carrots and apples.
Para alguns, esta era a ideia. Nos tivemos a oportunidade de alimentar os cavalos com cenouras e macas.
But my son had something else on his mind...
Mas o meu filho estava a pensar em algo completamente diferente...
He couldn't wait, he was anxious to experiment riding a motorcycle.
Ele estava ansioso por experimentar motocross.
Which he did, amazingly well! Even more incredible if you consider that his mom has sheltered him from any motorized vehicles. I have always preferred the vehicles with pedals for him (still do).
E ele dominou a mota incrivelmente bem! Para mim ainda mais incrivel pois eu tenho-o mantido afastado de qualquer veiculo motorizado. Sempre preferi veiculos com pedais para os meus filhos (ainda prefiro).

We received some lessons on the mechanics, was quite interesting for all the new riders.
Tivemos umas licoes de mecanica. Todos os novatos espreitaram e ouviram com toda a atencao e curiosidade.
Wow!
We also enjoyed Nature, the way we normally do.
Tambem nos divertimos na Natureza, como e costume.

Crafty!

Well, I have been solving the puzzle, and it is getting in shape.
Bom, eu tenho andado de volta do "puzzle" e esta a tomar forma.



I am stuck because I would like to give it some movement with the quilting and I am not sure how am I going to do it.
Mas quero dar-lhe movimento com o acolchoado e ainda nao sei como fazer.

I have painted my son's room. The room had a dark brown color and I really didn't like it. It looks a lot more cheerful with the new colors: safron (orange) and almond.
Pintei o quarto do meu filho. O quarto tinha uma cor castanha escura e eu nao gostava. Agora esta mais alegre, cor-de-laranja (acafrao) e amendoa.






I decided to give some color to the furniture too. That will come in later posts.
Decidi pintar algumas pequenas pecas de mobilia. Mostrarei num proximo "post".

no sewing here, kid's school glue, a piece of board paper and a piece of fabric.
sem costuras: cola da escola, um pedaco de cartolina e outro de pano.

These little "towels" and napkins are in the Green profile that I try to get in place and improve every day. I stopped buying and using paper napkins and dramatically reduced the use of paper towels. The cloth ones are washed with our clothes.
Estas toalhinhas e guardanapos estao no perfil "Verde" que nos queremos prosseguir e melhorar em cada dia. Eu ja nao compro guardanapos de papel e reduzi significantemente o uso de toalhas de papel. As de pano sao lavadas com o resto da roupa.

These are the bags and baskets I use for groceries: two beautiful baskets weaved in Portugal (I love them) and the cloth bags from my husband's meetings. I don't mind the "logos": They might not be pretty but I am not using plastic bags anymore.
estes sao os cestos e sacos que uso para ir as compras: dois lindos cestos artesanato de portugal (adoro-os!) e os sacos de pano que das conferencias do meu marido. Eu nao me importo com os "logos": podem nao ser bonitos mas a verdade e que eu deixei de usar sacos de plastico.

April: a retrospective

It is time to update you on my family's life!

The month of April started with a cold and rainy "Spring break" which was brightened by the visit of our friends from Florida. It rained all day but we had a lot of fun at the Science Museum!

Noticias da familia:
O mes de Abril comecou com a semana de ferias da escola. O tempo esteve frio e chuvoso. Isso nao impediu que a visita dos nossos amigos da Florida no fim-de-semana fosse explendida. No Sabado divertimo-nos no Museu da Ciencia:

On Sunday we celebrated my daughters fourth birthday.

Later in the month we made "crystals". It was a fun project and the result is now on display at my son's school.
Noutro dia fizemos cristais. Foi um projecto divertido e o produto esta na escola do Rui para os alunos que quiserem ver.

When I don't feel too well my children are the best doctors in the whole world.
Quando eu nao me sinto muito bem, os meus filhos sao os melhores medicos do mundo.

At my daughter's school the "Trike-a-thon" event where the children rode their bikes or tricycles as a fund raiser for the St. Jude's Children's Hospital. It was fun and the children learned about safety on the roads.

Na escola da minha filha organizou-se o "Trike-a-Thon" onde as criancas andaram de bicicleta ou triciclo para angariar fundos para o Hospital das Criancas "St. Jude". Foi divertido e as criancas da escola aprenderam sobre as regras de seguranca na estrada.
